News and Updates
Wheels at Work 2012
Wheels At Work has become one of SouthWood’s signature family events as a variety of large working vehicles gather across the street from the Conley School at SouthWood. Taking place on May 7th from 10:00 am-12:00 pm, some vehicles scheduled to appear at this year’s event include a fire truck, a school bus, a front-end loader and many more. Don’t miss the landing of an AirMedic 2 helicopter taking place at the intersection of Orange Ave. and Four Oaks Blvd at 11:00 am. To learn more, see the informational flyer.
Educational Needs Form for 2012-2013
As we approach the end of the year, it is time to begin reflecting on the year ahead. Once again, we are allowing parents to provide input into the placement of students in classrooms. This input can be made available to us through our Educational Needs Form. Your input is just one of many factors considered in making an educational placement for your child. Please understand that completing this form does not guarantee placement with a particular teacher. Do not name a particular teacher; instead give a description of your child’s educational needs. Include his/her strengths, special needs, interests, health concerns, separation from another child, a potential conflict situation, or any information you feel is helpful. Please use the provided format to ensure consistency. Return the completed form to the office or email it to Mrs. Brooks or Mrs. Urban by May 4, 2012. Requests received after May 4th will not be considered.
95210 Initiative Launch at Conley!
We are excited to report the media event held on our campus this morning (April 11) was a huge success. We were very honored to have many elected officials and other community members join our second graders in the kick-off of the community initiative: 95210, Heath by the Numbers. Mayor John Marks, Superintendent Pons, County Commissioner Nick Maddox, Dr. Homer Rice with the Leon County Health Department, and Dr. Cynthia Harris spoke to the crowd about 95210. Our students did an awesome job of holding signs, being an attentive audience and then singing to our visitors.
As a community of learners we are committed to supporting this initiative. Ask your child about the tenets of 95210. Not only do we want our children to adopt these goals for a healthy lifestyle, but we the adults of this community (faculty, staff, parents) need to be just as involved. Check out the news tonight (ABC and CBS) to catch a glimpse of the day.
To learn more about the 95210 initiative, visit 95210: The Whole Picture of Health on the Whole Child Leon website, or http://www.healthbythenumbers.us. 95210 stands for the following daily habits:
- 9 hours of sleep
- 5 servings of fruits and vegetables
- 2 hours or less of leisure screen time
- 1 hour of physical activity
- 0 sugary drinks and tobacco exposure
